In The Beginning………… Identify a Market

Do you know what you want to sell or promote? Do you have an idea? Have you done any research?

This is probably the most over looked part of starting an online business. There is no point in trying to sell something if there is no demand.

This is going to take some time.

Spend the first week researching your desired niche – your market.  You might find that the “love of your life” product is just yours and no one else’s. You might find that your niche is too broad and everyone is doing it. Competition is not a bad thing but if you are competing with huge corporations who can afford to throw thousands of dollars into online and offline advertising, then its time to refine your niche.

Unlike a brick and mortar store, having only one or two products to promote online is OK. Don’t be afraid to specialize but keep all products confined to the same niche.

It’s easier to create a web site around a tight niche then to go so broad that you fill your time building pages for products that won’t sell. Sites built around tight niches are more successful in getting higher organic ranking in the search engines for good keywords.

Besides, it just makes life a whole lot simpler.
