Pick your poison: Identify a Market Niche
What’s your passion? Do you like to golf? Do you collect coins? Do you make items? Do you collect model trains or cars?
Remember – For this exercise we are going to build an information site and monetize it with affiliate product, so think information.
This first week is going to be spent on research. What you are going to do is pick a topic and drill down within that topic until you find a niche you want to work with.
But first…………………………………………………..
There is something I want you to write down and tape to your computer. This Statement:
People who are shopping for ________________ might also be interested in (and possibly willing to pay for) instant information on _____________
Just because we are building an information site doesn’t mean you should forget about niches that have physical products. If you say that question out loud each time you look at a physical product or niche, you’ll be surprises at the ideas you come up with.
Try this example:
“People who are interested in Earrings might also be interested in instant information on Jewelry Cleaning.” See how easy that is?
So, once again let’s pick a topic. The topic has to be something you are interested in. If you aren’t interested then it will become a chore to build it and maintain it. Later on you can go for the topics that seem to pay well but you have no real interest in. Right now you are learning a system so let’s stick with something you like.
Let’s start by asking some really basic questions.
- What are your hobbies?
- What are you passionate about?
- Are there any subjects you are an expert in?
- What was (or is) your offline job? When we are young we pick jobs or careers and before you realize it, you’ve spent most of your adult life doing it. Maybe you are burned out from the job but you shouldn’t down play all the knowledge and experience you gained. That information is valuable.
There will be something that interests you – Dig deep!
The important thing to remember is: what ever your niche is, there is going to be competition. Competition is a good sign, not bad. When you run a search, you will see thousands and probably millions of pages devoted to that niche.
Don’t be discouraged. Drill down through the topics until you find a sub niche you like.
As you run your searches, note the keywords you use to find the information. If you are using those keywords and keyword phrases then so are other people. These will be useful later on.
